Poke bowls - what the hell is that? In case you have never heard about that delicious and healthy dish, i will tell you all about it today. The original poke bowl was created in hawaii and is originally a bowl full of healthy veggies, grains and some seafood. When it got more popular overseas as well, vegetarian and vegan friendly poke options were created as well.

But why is poke so extremely healthy? why should you start to eat it right away? and how do i make it myself?

every poke starts with a healthy base

Brown Rice - great source of fibre, B vitamins and minerals, will give you a lot of energy

Quinoa - There are SO many benefits to eating quinoa. It’s low GI, high in fibre and is higher in protein compared to other whole grains.

Soba Noodles - these noodles are typically made from buckwheat so they are amazing for all you gluten intolerant people out there

Sushi Rice - i would always go for brown rice, but white rice is also an option (make sure there is no sugar added though)

Now you add some protein

The original source of protein for poke bowls is salmon or prawns. YOu can definitely use chicken as well 0r some other kind of meat. Because i don’t eat any of that though, i will give you some vegan alternatives now.

Tofu - a great source of protein and iron

Seitan - Seitan easily takes on the flavors of your favorite seasonings. It’s also protein-packed, cholesterol-free, and low-carb

Tempeh - it contains even more protein than in tofu

chickpeas - excellent source of complex carbs, fiber, iron, folate, phosphorus, potassium, manganese and of course protein

DOn’t forget the veggies

Carrots - are rich in vitamin A

Beetroot - lowers blood pressure

Edamame - bumps up the protein and fibre content of your poke bowl

Kimchi - (fermented cabbage) source of probiotics

Radish - source of vitamin C

Avocado - rich in healthy fats which give it their deliciously creamy texture, high fibre content

Seaweed - source of protein and iodine.

Coconut - healthy fat and fibre

green peas - a good source of iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper and several other B vitamins

what about the dressing?

chia seeds - a good amount of iron, calcium, selenium and magnesium, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and various other beneficial plant compounds

soy sauce - a pretty salty sauce, so make sure to use it in moderation

Lemon and extra virgin olive oil - lots of flavor and nutrients

sesame oil - High Source of Unsaturated Fats, Lowers Blood Pressure, Helps Fight Stress and Depression

tahin - rich in omega-3 fatty acids, it may help reduce harmful cholesterol levels and lower the risk of heart disease and stroke

Toppings to make it beautiful

Roasted sesame - We love the roasted sesame dresses as they taste delicious, however, they can increase the overall calorie content a little. If you do go for a sauce like this, just keep an eye out on how much there is and be careful not to go overboard.

shredded nuts - Nuts and seeds are a great source of fiber and healthy fat, in addition to iron, calcium, magnesium, selenium, phosphorus, vitamin E and certain B vitamins. They also contain antioxidants, among other beneficial plant compounds

spirulina - lots of protein, magnesium, riboflavin, manganese, potassium and small amounts of most of the other nutrients your body needs, including essential fatty acids

hemp seeds - a good amount of magnesium, iron, calcium, zinc and selenium

nutritional yeast - excellent source of zinc, magnesium, copper, manganese and all the B vitamins, including B12

ok great - so much stuff goes inside a poke bowl - but why exactly should i eat it?

crazy great nutritional value - Poke is one of freshest, tastiest, healthiest new food trends around. you are able to get all the vitamins and nutrients in only one meal - how convenient is that?

it will protect your heart - Poke delivers important heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which help protect your heart and reduce the risk of death from heart disease by lowering your blood pressure

it is cheap - eating healthy on a budget can be difficult at times. a poke bowl will make it very easy to get all the goodness for a small amount of money

its the quick fix - when you are an impatient person, poke is perfect for you, because it takes about 2 minutes to throw all the ingredients together.

raw and rice in noosa

I am so in love with poke at the moment and i was so happy to discover Raw and rice in noosa the other day. It is a beautiful restaurant where you can build-your-own-bowl, adding a ton of ingredients named above. but you doN’t have to do the prep. You just ask for your favorite ingredients and they will arrange it for you in a super beautiful way. anything they use at Raw and rice is fresh and organic, sourced sustainably and even the take-away bowls and cutlery is made from recycled materials. i also love the importance they put on using locally grown veggies for their bowls. it feels good to know you are supporting local farmers with your purchase.

its fast, it is easy and it is super healthy. The people, who work there are super loving and friendly. We went for the soy rice poke bowl and took it right over to the beach (which is literally 2 minutes away), sat down on our blanket and watched the sunset while enjoying our bowl of health.

so make sure to head down hastings street whenever you are in noosa and pay them a visit.
